Description
The Gunpowder Falls Bouldering Area is host to various boulders and several various opportunities to FA new climbs! There are 4 quadrants split by the river and Falls Road. Hazel's Rocks, Hereford Hill, The Fin, and The Nub area.
The Nub Area hosts two high quality boulders, the Nub and Starry Night. The only other rock in this quadrant is further down the trail there is a massive 30ft+ highball buried uphill behind many bushes.
Hazel's Rocks and Hereford Hill both have the highest density of boulders with a ton of potential for first ascents. Past the "Squirrel Slab" in Hereford Hill there isn't much climbable rock.
The Fin is home to a few great top rope lines as well as a few scattered boulders.
The entire area is almost constantly shaded and is thus often damp and cold as a result of the surrounding tree cover. Try to bring some brushes and clean off moss, lichen, dust, and choss as this area is being developed. If you see any trash, throw it in your bag and carry it out. Be respectful of the fisherman, kayakers, and hikers who use this area. Don't blast music, try to keep power screaming to a minimum, and practice leave no trace. Only park in the designated parking lot.
Getting There
Located in North Baltimore County, in the Hereford area, just down stream from Prettyboy Dam, and right off of Falls Road, resides several boulders that lay alongside the Gunpowder Falls river. To access them, go North of the Gunpowder Falls Trailhead (i.e., the parking area: 1001 Falls Rd, Parkton, MD 21120) until you reach a bridge that goes over the Gunpowder Falls river. Once you reach the bridge, if you go to your right following the Gunpowder S Trail South (down-stream), about 10 minutes from the parking area, you should find The Fin Area ( mountainproject.com/area/11… ). However, if you go left, following the Gunpowder S Trail North (upstream) for about 10 minutes, you can find several boulders along the rivers banks that have the potential to be climbed.
