Description

Nobody would ever want to climb here due to the longer approach and lack of a trail, but if you are an Outward Bound instructor and your students are on solo in Silver Basin, there are some great lines to be had!

The view is incredible, the rock is solid (quartz monzonite I believe,) you can find many routes with 2 - 3 pitches, and if you're adventurous there are many more FAs to be had. Plus, it'll never be crowded!

Getting There

The best way to get there is to park as you would for climbing Huron. The directions below were lifted from the 14ers website.

"From Leadville: drive 20 miles south on U.S. 24 and turn right on the Chaffee County 390 road.

From Buena Vista: drive 14.5 miles north on U.S. 24, and turn left on the Chaffee County 390 road.

On the 390 road (dirt), drive 11.8 miles to Winfield. Turn left, and measure from here. Drive 0.1 mile to reach the lower, 2WD trailhead on the left. After 0.4 mile, the road gets rugged and narrow (4WD required). After 0.7 mile, stay right at a junction. After 1.7 miles, the Banker Mine road is to the left - stay straight on the main road, and continue to the end, at 2.1 miles. The trail starts past the parking area."

Take the CDT west (you may have to backtrack a bit,) over two bridges towards Virginia Peak. Follow the sign toward Silver Basin. Enter the drainage which is flanked by Virginia Peak to the North and Granite Mountain to the South. Virginia Peak has a trail to the top, and you can follow this west up the drainage until it starts to veer sharply uphill. At this point, leave the trail and handrail the stream west into the upper basin. You should see the big wall of rock once you reach the clearing in the upper basin. If you follow the stream all the way up, it'll take you within a stone's throw of the rock.
