Access Issue: Trail closures Details

Description

This is a bit of an unusual location for finding a bit of ice. The park is 1,969 acres on a 60 million year old plug of lava. The top of the mesa can collect snow and/or rain and freeze as it dribbles off the top. Those seeking anything of real length will be sorely disappointed here. These bits of ice have been climbed upon for decades. For the multisporters, one can combine a mountain bike ride with a bit of ice here, when the trails are open.

There are bits of ice on the southern, eastern, and northern sides of the mesa when conditions are right. The southern side will melt out very quickly. None of the ice will be more than 80' in length, and most will be 20-25' in length. The eastern side tends to have the most reliable bits of ice.

Note, the northeast part of the mesa has some year-round closures to recreation to protect the resources.

Getting There

To access the ethereal bits of ice on the southern side, you (if you are so lucky) can approach via the East Quarry approach off Easley Rd or from the blue house parking area off Easley Rd. to Ridge Rd. to Ulysses Way to W. 43rd Dr. Hike North, catch the North Table Loop and head west.

To access the eastern bits (when open), park at the lot behind Tony Grampsas Memorial Sports Complex-Golden Bike Park behind the archery range on Easley Rd. Hike up on Lithic Trail, catch the North Table Loop north, head uphill on the Mesa Top Trail. Find the ice in a small alcove near the top.

To access the ethereal northern bits, you can park at the CO 93 parking lot just north of Pine Ridge Rd. Follow the North Table Loop north. You can go to the top of the mesa via Mesa Top Trail.
