Description

Remote ice route near the equally remote (but more worth-the-effort) rock crag Easter Island. 30 minutes drive north of Saranac Lake and 2+ hour approach guarantees you won't have to fight any crowds.

Getting There

From Saranac Lake drive 15 miles on Rt 3 east, passing through Bloomingdale and Vermontville. Turn left on County Rt 26. Go 7.8 miles to the trailhead lot on the left. Follow hiking trail for about 2 miles to the second bridge. Leave the trail here and bushwhack (not too bad) up along the stream to the saddle between the main peak (the one with the fire tower) and the lower east peak. Follow heading of 140° for 5-10 minutes or until steep rock comes in on the left: first the Slab will be visible upslope and 3 minutes later the steep Ramp Wall will be in front of you. Keep this to your left as you descend slightly, keeping the next couple rock faces within eyesight on the left. Once the terrain forces you uphill again, you'll come to the ice.
