Description

The Lookout Mountain Dry Tooling Area is an assortment of chossy crags that have been forgotten by rock climbers (and for good reason). The cliffs are choked by vegetation and offer no enjoyable climbing. Fortunately, the dirty, lichen covered, vegetated, north-facing crags offer a good number of quality mixed climbs for the moderate, traditional mixed leader.

Pins are allowed, when appropriate. Fixed protection is not. There are no anchors for top roping, although you may be able to find something here or there to build an anchor and bring up your second. The rock is bad enough that you may decide to belay off of your harness.

There is a LOT of loose rock in this area! A helmet is a good idea.

Getting There

From US 6, take Lookout Mountain road around 1.8 miles to a pullout on the left side of the road at a sharp left turn. A trail goes straight downhill from the road, and a short scramble will take you to the base of the climbs.
