Iowa's premier deep water bouldering...

A reservoir of the source spring of most of Iowa's great climbing, the Maquoketa river, it's no surprise that climbing would be found along its banks. Premier deep water bouldering in fact. The main feature of note is Injun Joe rock, an institutional cliff jumping spot for the fine folks of this Iowan maritime paradise. There are likely more cliffs and features hiding along its banks waiting for climber's discovery. This is Iowa, in peak summertime season you will be far outnumbered by high powered watercraft, screaming children, and all the joyous antics of drunk boaters. As the Wikipedia page proclaims "The largest boat currently operating on Lake Delhi is the USS White Privilege." Far from a peaceful getaway this feature is unique for offering a summertime climbing respite from the humidity and insect swarms of other Iowa destinations during the sticky summer months.

Climb at your own risk and please be smart. Injun Joe was the site of a 17 year olds fatality cliff-jumping. Use of a life-vest that does not impair shoulder mobility is the way to recreate responsibly.

Getting There

Lake Delhi. Upstream from Monticello. Injun Joe cove can be seen southwest of the dam. Take to the water here, Smokey's Lost Bar and Grill, or the Hartwick marina. Landlubbers be damned.
