Access Issue: Red Rock RAIN AND WET ROCK: The sandstone is fragile and is very easily damaged when wet. Details

Description

A beautiful highball arete located on the right side of the canyon with a lofty approach.
From middle of canyon you can see the large spire of the boulder sticking out with a wide crack running down it’s right side.

Getting There

The best way to get to this boulder is to cut right and get on the other side of the wash/ridge line on your approach to black velvet before you get to the Fountain Head.

You should find a trail that leads up to the base of the wall separating black velvet into two forks (Burlap Buttress) and take steep switchbacks to get up there. From here head right and follow cairns up above the red band of rock on the left.

Do not drop down early to go below the band.

After passing over the red band, continue to follow cairns and the trail into the tree line between some boulders. The trail starts to get a bit constricted, but it still fairly noticeable. From here you should cross a creek (or a small wash if it is dry, shown in the photos) where Water Colors lies to your left. After crossing you will go up above the tree line again through a chossy trail with lots of scree (this view with a drawn path is also in the photos). Go to the right and bushwhack a bit through very tight bushy trails and travel downhill to crawl beneath a large wide and flat boulder (this view is also in the photos). This will open up the alcove with Gunga Galunga.
