Description

An incredibly convenient climbing spot for locals in the Aspen area, Gold Butte is a collaborative project between Pitkin County Open Space & Trails, many dedicated locals, and some area businesses.

Ute Mountaineer maintains the official online guidebook, including history on the project, names of everyone involved in opening the Butte, and some more information on the various routes.

Getting There

Heading west out of Aspen on CO Hwy 82, turn right/north on Cemetery Lane immediately after crossing the Castle Creek Bridge.

Follow this road for approximately 1.5 miles all the way down until you start heading back up the hill again. As you start uphill, there is parking and facilities immediately on the left hand side at Stein Park, or if you choose to continue up the hill for a quarter mile more, there is parking again on the left across from the Sunnyside Trail. This lot is much smaller and can fill up with people hiking and biking the local area.

You can reach The Butte from Stein by taking the Rio Grande Trail (following the Roaring Fork River) and hiking up a faint trail from directly below the crag. If you parked at the second lot across from Sunnyside, use the trail located 10 yards north of the lot on the downhill side of the road.
