East Clear Creek Rock Climbing

East Clear Creek is a treasured raparian zone which courses through the heart of a seemingly dried out, high desert flatland. It takes root at Blue Ridge Resevoir, and then the spring fed creek runs north towards Winslow, ending in the small reservoir known as Lake McHood. Eventually the water filters down into one of the largest natural aquifers in the state of Arizona. This aquifer is also fed by Chevelon Canyon to the East, as well as, Canyon Diablo to the North.

The Winslow Wall operates as a fully functional sport crag, and perhaps more of a limited, adventurous trad crag with confirmed classics. So whatever you are looking for you are sure to find it here. The Winslow Wall section of East Clear Creek is formed of Coconino Sandstone that has been worn by the steady flow of the creek and the seasonal monsoon rains. This place is magic when the rains come in and the water runnels start flowing. It turns into thousands of minuture waterfalls each with its own unique path. That said, this canyon, can and does flash! It is not uncommon to see water moved debris stuck in the second or even the third bolts on the routes. Know the weather forecast, and plan accordingly as there is limited high ground or easy exits. If heavy rain comes in, the prudent thing is to exit post haste.

Dad's gotta do what a dad's gotta do

There are a growing number of areas along this canyon, however most of the access treads across state checkerboard and Hopi Ranch Lands. Be considerate. Do not drive off established two track roads. If a gate was closed when you found it, close it when you pass. Keep a low profile, and of course, don't harass the cattle in any fashion or disturb ranch property. You may come across well houses and other structures either modern or historical. Do not disturb or remove native artifacts.

The Winslow Wall seems to have been "Grandfathered" into good, steady access over the years, though other areas may be treated differently. This hands off relationship was once jeopardized by climber’s leaving semi permanent structures and trash at the parking area. This canyon is a “pack it in, pack it out” area. If you see trash, pick it up. This is holy land.
