Description

A small, concentrated area with a few classics, a few warmups, and a few projects. General difficulty seems to be in the V2-V6ish range. It's an ongoing effort to get everything totally cleaned.

Rock is generally solid, sharp schist mixed with lots of gneiss, some pink. There are many instances of quartzite and a few sandstone-like crimps. Great friction. The smaller, schistier flakes do break easily but good-quality footing can still be found anywhere.

As to why a bunch of the trees are destroyed: This area is under active management by the CT DEEP Division of Forestry in order to counter the decline in certain populations of trees. They selectively saw down certain trees (I know, it's a sad sight) with the goal of keeping their ages uneven. This is in order to "increase vertical stratification and diversify canopy layers within the Forest." More details can be found in the report: portal.ct.gov/-/media/DEEP/…

Getting There

The entrance is the small pulloff area along Spielman Highway (Route 4), directly adjacent to Mountain Spring Road. Detailed driving instructions can be easily found on Google maps if you search for "mountain spring road burlington ct."

Once in the parking area, take the blue/yellow blazed trail. Follow for a few minutes until you reach a fork, where you will take the unblazed trail on the left. After less than 10 more minutes of walking, you'll come to a creek (might be dry) and the boulders will be on your right.

There is an alternative path, if you would prefer to stay on blazed trails: Sticking with the blue/yellow trail after the fork, you will soon come to another fork - take the blue/purple trail on the left. Several more minutes of walking will lead you directly to the boulders (they surround the trail).
